Why Learning Spanish Is Challenging! How to Support Your Homeschooler!

By Natlingo

As you gear up for a new school year, it’s important to identify and understand common pitfalls your homeschooler might face when learning Spanish.

If your child has struggled with learning Spanish, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, this struggle is normal and very common, as language learning is hard. It requires motivation, consistency, and a lot of patience, for both the learner and the parent. At Natlingo, we’ve seen these challenges firsthand, which is exactly why we’ve built our Spanish immersion sessions to help families overcome them. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common obstacles homeschoolers face when learning Spanish, and practical ways to address them.

Challenge #1: Motivation Slumps

Many kids start the year excited about learning a new language but quickly lose steam. You might hear: “Why do I have to learn Spanish? Everyone speaks English!” Or you notice they clam up when asked to speak, even though they know the words.

Why this happens: Kids don’t yet see the usefulness or joy of learning a new language. Without that connection, Spanish becomes “just another subject.”

How to help: Bring Spanish into activities they already enjoy. Try family movie nights with Spanish shows and moves, music in Spanish dance breaks, or even special “Spanish culture nights” with movies and yummy treats- think the movie Coco in Spanish and churros! Bonus points if they’ve already seen the movie in English before. Better yet, connect learning to real people—meeting native speakers or exploring Hispanic culture together helps kids understand the “why.”

At Natlingo, our live one-on-one sessions with native Spanish-speaking tutors are designed to be fun and interactive, helping students make those joyful, real-world connections in real Spanish from day one.

Challenge #2: Lack of Consistent Practice

Like learning an instrument, Spanish requires steady practice. Once-a-week lessons won’t stick with your homeschooler. Kids need frequent exposure—ideally three to five days a week—to build fluency.

Why this happens: Homeschool schedules are already packed, and it’s hard to carve out daily time for language study.

How to help at home now: Look for small, everyday moments to weave Spanish learning in. Practice vocabulary while cooking breakfast everyday, label household items in Spanish, or set aside short 10-minute “mini-sessions” around a fun topic like gardening. Consistency matters more than length.

Natlingo’s Conquistador subscription includes 16 live one-on-one Zoom sessions with a native Spanish-speaking tutor, each month plus unlimited games and books in Spanish that make daily practice easy and engaging—without you needing to plan it all yourself. Learn more here.

Challenge #3: Curriculum Mis-Match

Sometimes the issue isn’t effort—it’s the materials. Not every program fits every homeschool learner. Maybe the curriculum is too dry, too advanced, or too “hands-off” for your child’s needs.

Why this happens: With so many homeschool Spanish options— digital apps, physical textbooks, video lessons—it’s easy to feel like you chose “wrong” or that something better exists.

How to help: Ask yourself:
- Is the program age-appropriate?
- Does my child need more accountability than a self-paced digital app like Duolingo?
- Is the content engaging enough to hold their attention?

Natlingo offers personalized, age-appropriate Spanish immersion with live native Spanish-speaking tutors and a platform full of interactive games and books—so kids get the best of both worlds: accountability and fun!

Challenge #4: Learning Differences

For children with dyslexia, ADHD, or auditory processing challenges, Spanish can feel even harder. These students may struggle with listening, pronunciation, or reading in a second language.

How to help: Adjust expectations and provide support—more visual aids, slower-paced lessons, or accommodations like focusing on speaking rather than writing. If challenges persist across subjects or if your child has a documented learning disability and is struggling to learn the Spanish language, you might want to consider making some accommodations in his/her language studies.

Our Natlingo tutors adapt sessions for different learning styles, helping every child find a path to success.

Final Words of Encouragement

If your homeschooler is finding Spanish tough, don’t be too hard on yourself! You’re not doing anything wrong, and you’re doing the best you can. Struggle is part of the process, and with the right support, it becomes a growth opportunity and the pathway to success.

Remember: consistency, connection, and community make all the difference.

That’s why Natlingo exists—to give families access to native Spanish-speakers, immersive cultural learning, and a community of peers who are on the same journey. Together, we can turn Spanish from a frustrating subject into a skill your child will carry for life. Learn more about our subscriptions here.
